He takes my chin in his fingers, tilting my face to his. Fans of Black’s dramatic and gritty romantic pairing will not be disappointed here. The pairing is sparse throughout the novel, but made all the more compelling when the two find themselves alone. TWK brings Jude and Cardan new problems, but among them is a large helping of sexual tension. Holly Black does not leave fans of the first novels’ romance hanging. ![]() ![]() The story is immersive, and the characters are awful. Black does an excellent job of pacing the novel so that there is never a spare moment to try and figure out how it will all end - you can only keep reading. The plot is fast-paced and riveting, easy to devour in mere hours. With the Undersea threatening war and Cardan’s brother, Balekin vying for the Crown, Jude has her hands full. Cardan is playing High King while Jude works with the Shadow court to keep things in Faerieland running smoothly. Where before Cardan was the Jude’s tormentor, the tables have turned. The Wicked King begins as Jude and Cardan are getting used to their new positions of power, and their bargain with one another. ![]()
